Walk in the Mendocino County oak woodlands and you will often find turkey tail mushrooms, Trametes versicolor. They can be found more or less year-round on dead and decaying hardwood tree species. The colors in their fantail-shaped fruiting bodies can range from rust and ochre to dusty browns and nearly purple grays to slate-like blues. The typical half-circle shape and colorful stripes of the turkey tail mushroom make it the perfect vehicle for a stripey half-pi shawl. Renowned designer Elizabeth Zimmermann first created the design for a circular pi shawl, based on the relationship between a circle’s circumference and its radius. A half-pi shawl is just as it sounds: a half-circle based on the same mathematical principles.
